One thing to watch out, do not replace the shavings and the bedding for at least the first 2 weeks. If
a section in the cage becomes smelly, Try to quietly life the mess up with a glove, and replace with some
new shavings. On the other hand, do replace the bath tub frequently.
Here we go, brothers!
It takes about 10 days for the eyes on the babies to open (time varies for different species). Ours opened
on the 9th day and they became even more energetic - they were splinting, playing and jumping up and down
all day long!
As the kids are getting bigger, the mother cannot produce enough milk to satisfy their thirst. They need
another source for water intake. Unfortunately, they are still too small to reach the tube of the water
bottle. We could use a shallow dish to hold some water for them, and treat them some peeled apple that
are chopped into little pieces. Remember to throw away excess food to avoid spoilage.
Many suggest that baby hamsters will become independent around 18 days after birth. By that time, they
should be big enough to use the water bottle. In our case, for some unknown reasons, they were forced
to wean on the 12th day because Marshmallow started ignoring her kids and stayed away from them. We
knew the babies were asking for milk but we couldn't offer help. Perhaps she was too young to be a
responsible mother?
Now this is the time to decide what to do with the siblings; you may want to give some away to your
friends or keep them all for yourself. For the latter case, at least one additional cage is necessary
because you will want to keep the sons with the father and the daughter with the mother.
